The Critical Role of Air Inlets in Mechanical Ventilation Systems for Livestock and Poultry Housing

In modern livestock farming, environmental control is an essential prerequisite for ensuring animal health, welfare, and productivity. Although exhaust fans—acting as the “engine” of mechanical ventilation systems—often garner the most attention, air inlets—serving as the equally vital “lungs”—are frequently overlooked. Even if the fans are appropriately selected, poorly designed or managed air inlets can still lead to drafts, uneven air distribution, excessive humidity, and an increased incidence of respiratory diseases.

The Critical Roles of Air Inlets

Controlling Airflow Velocity:During cold weather, incoming cold air must be directed toward the center of the ceiling at a high velocity (typically 4–7 meters per second, or 800–1400 feet per minute). This ensures that the cold air has ample time to warm up and thoroughly mix with the indoor air before descending into the animals’ living zone, thereby effectively preventing the animals from suffering from cold stress.
Ensuring Uniform Distribution:Air inlets facilitate the uniform distribution of airflow throughout the entire length of the livestock facility, thereby eliminating “dead spots” (areas where air stagnates) and “airflow shadow zones” (areas characterized by excessive airflow or drafts).
Maintaining Static Pressure Balance:Air inlets work in tandem with exhaust fans to maintain a slight negative pressure within the facility (typically ranging from -5 to -15 Pascals). This negative pressure differential ensures that fresh air enters the facility in an orderly manner—strictly through the designated air inlets—rather than seeping in haphazardly through uncontrolled pathways such as gaps in doors and windows or cracks in the walls.
